Heat the vegetable oil in a pot over medium heat and cook the onion until soft.

Add the garlic, carrot, and celery, then cook until the vegetables begin to soften.

Stir in the tomato paste, cumin powder, turmeric powder, salt, and black pepper.

Add the lentils and water, bring to a simmer, and cook until the lentils are completely tender.
