About the project

Food discovery with more context and fewer assumptions.

Around the Table is an independent recipe-discovery project created and maintained by a single developer. It exists to make it easier to explore dishes from around the world, understand how they are prepared, and find something practical to cook.

Why it exists

A practical way to move from curiosity to cooking.

The site combines an interactive world map with country and recipe browsing. You can also search the catalogue, compare recipes with ingredients in your pantry, scale servings, switch measurement systems, and use a focused cook mode while preparing a dish.

Publisher recipes are chosen to represent recognizable everyday dishes, regional specialties, drinks, breads, sweets, and celebration foods with a credible connection to the country shown.

A country's food is never limited to one definitive list. The catalogue is a discovery guide, not an official national canon, and it continues to improve as better information becomes available.

Editorial process

How a publisher recipe reaches the catalogue

Technology may assist the initial draft and illustration. Every publisher recipe is then opened, read, and corrected individually before publication; there is no automatic publish step.

  1. 01

    Prepare a structured draft

A technology-assisted draft is created specifically for Around the Table for a named dish and country. It includes ingredients, quantities, timings, instructions, servings, dietary tags, a nutrition estimate, and regional context.

  2. 02

    Review every recipe individually

Each recipe is opened and manually reviewed as a complete cooking flow. Ingredients are checked against the method, quantities and timings are corrected, and unclear or unsafe wording is rewritten.

  3. 03

    Publish and keep improving

The corrected recipe is published as an Around the Table catalogue recipe. It is not copied or adapted from a specific external recipe, and reader corrections remain welcome when better context is available.

Community recipes are separate from the publisher catalogue and remain attributed to the members who submit them.

Editorial checklist

What each review checks

Review is intended to catch both culinary problems and catalogue inconsistencies before publication.

  1. Recognizable dish naming, country context, and regional framing
  2. Ingredient choices, quantities, ratios, and preparation notes
  3. Consistency between the ingredient list and every instruction
  4. Clear chronological steps, realistic timings, and serving guidance
  5. Food-safety language for meat, poultry, seafood, eggs, and storage
  6. Measurement formatting, serving conversion, nutrition plausibility, and natural English

Context

Regional variations

Many dishes cross borders, change from one town or family to another, or have several accepted spellings. We use a clear country association when the evidence supports it and explain the version represented rather than calling one variation the universally authentic recipe.

Estimates

Images and nutrition

Recipe images are illustrative and may not show the exact result produced in every kitchen. Nutrition values are estimates based on the listed ingredients and serving count; brands, substitutions, preparation, and portion size can change the final values.

An important distinction

What editorial review does not mean

Editorially reviewed does not mean that every recipe has been physically cooked or kitchen-tested by Around the Table, and we do not claim that publisher recipes were written by professional chefs.

Equipment, ingredients, altitude, and appliance performance vary. Use safe food-handling practices, check doneness carefully, and adjust cooking times when your ingredients or equipment require it.

Corrections are welcome

Local knowledge makes the catalogue better.

If you spot an attribution issue, mistranslation, unclear instruction, unsafe step, or a better-supported regional explanation, send the recipe link and the correction you recommend.
