Cover the mopane worms with the water and let them stand briefly to soften and loosen any grit. Drain and rinse again.

Heat the vegetable oil in a pot over medium heat and cook the onion until softened and lightly golden.

Cook until the tomatoes have broken down and the mixture looks thick and rich.
