Method

Place the split peas, water, ham, onion, carrot, and bay leaves in a large pot and bring to a boil.

Skim off any foam, lower the heat, and simmer gently, partially covered, until the split peas break down and the soup becomes thick.

Remove the bay leaves and stir in the dried marjoram, salt, and black pepper. If the soup is too thick, loosen it with a little hot water.

Take out the ham, cut it into smaller pieces if needed, and return it to the pot.

Serve the soup hot with mustard and sliced rye bread on the side.
