    Simmer the pearl barley in the water until tender but still pleasantly chewy, then drain any excess liquid.

    Cover the poppy seeds with the hot water, let them soften, drain thoroughly, and crush until aromatic.

    While the barley is warm but no longer steaming hot, mix in the honey, poppy seeds, raisins, walnuts, and vanilla extract.
