DreikönigskuchenThree Kings Crown Bread
This festive pull-apart crown is a soft enriched bread made with milk, butter, and egg, then finished with almonds and pearl sugar. It has the gentle sweetness and celebratory look traditionally associated with Epiphany baking in the Alpine region.

Method
Follow each step in order. Ingredient names are highlighted as you go.
- 01
Stir the active dry yeast into the lukewarm whole milk and leave for 5 to 10 minutes, until foamy.
- 02
Mix the all-purpose flour, white sugar, and salt in a large bowl.
- 03
Add the yeasted milk, egg, and vanilla extract, then knead until a shaggy dough forms.
- 04
Work in the unsalted butter and continue kneading until the dough is smooth and elastic. Knead in the raisins at the end.
- 05
Cover the dough and leave it for about 60 minutes, until doubled in size.
- 06
Line a baking tray and heat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
- 07
Divide and shape the dough into one larger central ball and several smaller balls. Arrange them in a crown pattern so they just touch.
- 08
Cover again and let the shaped bread rise for 20 to 30 minutes, until puffy.
- 09
Brush the bread with the beaten egg, then scatter over the almonds and pearl sugar.
- 10
Bake for 22 to 25 minutes, until the crown is deep golden and sounds hollow when tapped underneath. Cool slightly before serving.
