Method

Preheat the oven to 110°C (230°F).

Grease a loaf pan with the unsalted butter.

Mix the rye flour, whole wheat flour, baking powder, and salt in a bowl.

Stir in the buttermilk and dark syrup until you have a thick, even batter, then scrape it into the prepared pan.

Place the loaf pan in a deep roasting pan and pour in the water so it comes about halfway up the sides.

Cover the loaf pan tightly and bake until the bread is dark, moist, and firm enough to slice.
