    Tomato (finely chopped)

    Hot Chili (finely chopped)

    Heat the palm oil in a heavy pot over medium heat.

    Add the onion and cook for 5 to 7 minutes, until softened.

    Stir in the tomato, garlic, hot chili, and odika paste and cook for 5 minutes, until thickened and fragrant.

    Pour in the water and bring to a boil.

    Add the taro leaf, reduce the heat, and simmer uncovered for 35 to 40 minutes, stirring occasionally, until completely tender. Do not taste the leaves while raw or undercooked.

    Add the smoked fish and salt and simmer for 10 minutes more, until the stew is cohesive and hot throughout.
