Method
Follow each step in order. Ingredient names are highlighted as you go.
- 01
Stir the active dry yeast into the lukewarm whole milk and let it stand until foamy.
- 02
Mix the all-purpose flour, white sugar, vanilla sugar, and salt in a bowl. Add the eggs, melted unsalted butter, and the yeast mixture, then knead until the dough is smooth and elastic.
- 03
Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size.
- 04
Simmer the poppy seeds with the whole milk and white sugar over low heat for 5 to 7 minutes, until thick and spreadable. Cool completely.
- 05
Divide the dough into small rounds and place them on a baking tray. Let them puff up again briefly, then press a shallow well into the center of each.
- 06
Fill the centers with the poppy seed filling and a spoonful of plum jam.
- 07
Bake at 180°C (350°F) for 16 to 20 minutes, until lightly golden.
- 08
Cool the kolaches slightly, then dust them with the powdered sugar.
